Dr. John Kenerson is a senior and founding partner of Cardiovascular Associates, serving hospitals in Virginia and North Carolina. As former CEO of this integrated hospital-based system of more than 20 cardiologists with subspecialties including quaternary regional referral care, Dr. Kenerson was responsible for the development of nuclear cardiology and cardiac catheterization programs, with direct involvement in the planning and development of interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery programs.
A graduate of the University of Vermont School of Medicine, Dr. Kenerson has been in medical practice since 1982 and is a recognized leader in the development of cardiology services in Virginia Beach, including the successful development of Tidewater Cardiovascular Institute, a nationally recognized hybrid hospital and patient-centered system that provides the highest quality cardiac care, research, testing, rehabilitation, and community service for the Virginia Beach community.
For twenty years Dr. Kenerson served as Medical Director of Cardiology Services at Virginia Beach General Hospital (VBGH) and Tidewater Cardiovascular Institute, and is a founding board member of the Hampton Roads Physician Organization and Priority Health Care HMO.
In Haiti, Dr. Kenerson’s professional leadership and team building experience has helped develop several successful projects and programs, including: recruitment of a U.S. volunteer group addressing in-kind donations of medical supplies and equipment as part of the development of a multidisciplinary support system network for patients and health care workers in the Central Plateau; active participation with Dave Plum and his team on the installation of a water system to address the critical and threatening issue of waterborne disease; and expansion of a medical clinic in Baptiste, including immediate plans to expand a mother/baby unit, with the hope that the clinic will serve as a model best possible practice site for rural care with focused treatment on parasites, hypertension and stroke, eye care, urology, GI, and maternal health.
In 2012, Dr. Kenerson was the co-recipient of the University of Vermont College of Medicine Salute to Service and Community Alumni Award. In 2010 he was honored as the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) Baccalaureate speaker. He is also the 2009 recipient of the Krueger Lectureship Virginia Beach Physician of the Year in recognition of his community service and teaching as well as the 2009 co-recipient of the Medical Society of Virginia Salute to International Service Award.
